Saturn Personification

Done for 's contest. [link] There were four themes, and I chose to personify a planet, since I'm an astronomy nerd.

It's unknown how many rings Saturn has, however they are split into 7 sets, A-G. Because of this, I added 7 rings: 1 on her neck, one on each wrist and ankle, 1 around her shoulder, and 1 large one around her waist.

Saturn has like, 62 confirmed moons. The huge one, Titan, bigger than the planet Mercury, and little moonlets less than a kilometer across. To represent these, I gave her a head band. Obviously, we can't see all 62 moons, but they're there....

Other than these two specifications, the only other part of her outfit that really had any symbolism in it is the flowy bits coming out of her body suit. The outside layer of Saturn is gaseous, so I thought I'd do something a little light and flowy to represent that. Other than that, anything else was just for fun. I love stockings, and I was listening to a song that I danced to when I was in ballet, so I decided to put her in a body suit.

The colours were chosen based on the colour of the planet, which is beige. It would be boring for her to be entirely beige, so I included browns, reds, oranges and yellows. My scanner, unfortunately, cannot pick up the differences in certain red tones, so the flowing fabric from her body suit lacks the cooler shadows that were present in the original, and is a darker, more vibrant red than the salmon red I used. The background is obivously intended to be outer space.

I drew Saturn as a little girl because well, uh... I could? I know the Roman god Saturn is male, but... I like drawing girls, and I wanted to practice drawing girls who aren't "fully developed". The reason for Saturn not being fully developed is because in relation to the age of the universe, she's just a little thing. Probably even littler than how I drew her. But still. Also, while child like in appearance, I see her as a "giant" compared to every planet's personification except Jupiter, which is a giant compared to her. This is because Saturn is the second largest planet.

Time: about 3 hours on the lineart & sketch(off/on doing other stuff), about 3 colouring.

Overall, I'm really happy with this piece. I put a lot of effort into it, and I tried out some new stuff with my colouring, and I think it turned out well. The background is streaky... but I swear, it didn't look so bad before I scanned it. I tried some new things with skin tones, and I think they blended really well.
